# Merchant Accounts

# Merchant Account Types and Hierarchy

Skipify recognizes two types of merchants, *stand-alone* and *parent*. Underneath parent merchants there are child merchants. If you are unsure of which configuration you need, please ask your implementation manager.

The **stand-alone** merchant type is for merchants who have only one set of configurations and payment gateway credentials.

The **parent merchant** set-up type is typically for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and platforms that manage multiple E-commerce businesses. Parent merchants can contain any number of **child merchants**.

* As a parent merchant user, when you sign in to the Skipify merchant portal, you will have elevated privileges to manage any merchant that belongs to your parent merchant account.
* Any configurations (except payment processing credentials) set on the parent merchant will be inherited by all child merchants unless a configuration has been explicitly set on the child.

# Onboarding Merchant Accounts

Skipify will create your stand-alone or parent merchant account.

The [merchant portal](https://docs.skipify.com/docs/merchant-portal#/) or [Onboarding APIs](https://docs.skipify.com/docs/merchant-onboarding#/) are available to create new child merchants and manage merchant configurations. Check out the [onboarding docs](https://docs.skipify.com/docs/merchant-onboarding) for more details.

# Merchant Account Configurations

Configurations can be set:

* in the [merchant portal](https://docs.skipify.com/docs/merchant-portal)
* during time of merchant account onboarding via `POST /merchants` and related `POST /configs`, `POST /merchant-external-credentials` APIs

Note that [Button cobranding configurations](https://docs.skipify.com/docs/skipify-sdk#button-cobranding-configurations-optional) is set via the Checkout SDK integration.
